Yule Day 1: The Colours of Yule

The season of Yule is a beautiful time of year filled with ancient symbolism. It is a time of hope and a festive celebration of rebirth.

It is interesting to learn about the symbols and where we see them today. In this post we will start with the pagan colours of Yule. We can see these colours in the decorations in the stores today.

A Yule log in olden days was a symbol of good and evil. A log from the previous year was burned for good luck.

Modern Yule logs typically hold three candles. According to wicca.com, the colours of the candles could be red, green and white to represent "season;" green, gold and black to represent the "Sun God;" and white, red and black to represent the "Great Goddess." According to earthwitchery.com, the goddess colours represent the goddess "in her three aspects -- maiden, mother, and crone." That website also says the log's candles may be green, red and silver or white to "represent the Oak King, the Holly King, and the Goddess; or white, red, and black to represent the Triple Goddess."
